Should you buy the dealer upsells?

What do you think of aftermarket oil guard or the electronic anti-corrosion modules offered by dealers? Alternatives? – Dave, London, Ont.

It sounds like you have journeyed to the financial manager’s office at the dealership to be upsold on a variety of corrosion prevention products and services.

One of those products is an electronic anti-corrosion device – well-respected in the shipping industry – designed for large salt-water vessels known as cathodic protection systems. These nano-sized versions offered by the dealer are pure profit items with little return for the consumer. I have examined many vehicles with one of these electronic devices installed showing significant corrosion. An Internet search yields multiple studies concluding that these devices offer little protection for passenger vehicles. Pass on this.

I do, however, believe that oil-based rust protection is a fantastic idea when long-term ownership is expected. In-house dealer options are typically supported by the manufacturer but come with a hefty price tag.

Third-party rust protection providers offer their own corrosion guarantees that do not void the warranty, so don’t be swayed by a salesperson’s declarations to the contrary. This is where you should focus your research. Yes, holes will have to be drilled to access hard-to-reach areas, but these holes, once properly treated, are rarely an issue.
